Tour de France 1997 (cards) - Eurobox Media

In the occasion of the 1997 Tour de France, a card collection was released by Eurobox Media, as an official licensed product by the Tour de France top teams. This is the second cycling card collection, following the Merlin's release of Cyclisme 96

The 1997 collection includes a base set of 125 cards and a special set of 24 cards. In the base set there are 123 cards of cyclists and two checklist cards. Cyclist cards have an action photo in the front with ryder details and description on the back.

The special cards are divided in three groups: "Massive Attack" cards celebrate the best recent attacks in the Tour de France (9 cards, MA1 - MA9), "XTreme Highlights" show some relevant Tour de France moments (8 cards, XH1 - XH8) and "All-Time Legends" depict the most legendary cyclists in the history of the Tour de France (7 cards, ATL1 - ATL7)

Packets of this collection include 9 cards. As it can be read on the packet, the special cards "Massive Attack" could be found one every six packets, whereas the "X-treme Highlights" one every 12 packets and the "All-time legends" one every 35 packets. The existance of ultra rare autograph cards is mentioned on the packet.

The 1997 Tour de France was dominated by the German Jan Ullrich, who was very strong in the individual time trials and able to defend himself well in the mountains. The French Richard Virenque had a regular race for three weeks and finished at the second place. The Italian Marco Pantani lost time in the time trials, but won two major stages in the mountains (Alpe d'Huez and Morzine), closing the race at the third place.

Cards nr. 124 and 125 are the checklist of this collection.

Jan Ullrich won the Tour de France 1997 and Richard Virenque got the second place. Third on the podium Marco Pantani.

Mario Cipollini "Victory" card and Laurent Jalabert "Team Flags" card

In 1997, Pantani was the definitely the best climber of the World. In this collection he has two special cards (but no card in the base set): Xtreme Highlights and Massive Attack celebrate his attacks in Hautacam (Tour de France '94) and his victory at Guzet Neige (Tour de France '95).

Chiappucci Massive Attack card (front and back) celebrates his victory in Sestriere 1992, where he took the King of the Mountains jersey and kept it all the way to Paris.
