Futbol Uruguayo 2002

The 2002 Uruguayan Primera Division was contested by 18 clubs. After the regular season, the best 10 clubs played a double tournament (Apertura and Clausura), whereas the last eight clubs played the relegation league. The winner of the Apertura and Clausura tournaments (Nacional and Danubio) played a final in which Nacional won both games for 2-1, becoming champions of the season. The top goalscorer was Hornos (Felix) with 25 goals.

For the season 2002, Panini published the third consecutive official sticker collection of the league, which follows the Copa Coca-Cola 2000 and the Futbol Uruguayo 2001. Few years later, Panini resumed the series with four new albums (2005, 2007, 2008, 2009).

The album Futbol Uruguayo 2002 includes all the 18 clubs of Primera Division. The best 10 clubs that played the Apertura and Clausura tournaments are shown first, introduced by the fixtures of the tournament and one page with the home kits (10 stickers). Then the clubs are shown following the alphabetical order with a total of 19 stickers over two pages: the flag (shiny sticker), the team photo (composed by two stickers), and 16 players in action. There are no club badge stickers, but the flag includes the colours and symbol of the club. The eight clubs playing the relegation league are shown later, again introduced by a page with the eight home kit stickers. Among the most remarkable players of this collection we can mention Ruben Oliveira and Diego Lugano.

Back cover of the album

The most famous players included in this collection: Ruben Oliveira played for many Italian clubs (including Juventus), whereas Diego Lugano played 5 years for Fenerbahce (from 2006 to 2011) before moving to PSG, Malaga and West Bromwich; they have 18 and 95 caps for Uruguay, respectively.

Santiago Silva had a long career playing for many clubs in South America, including Boca Juniors, with a brief experience in Italy (Fiorentina 2011/12). Pierre Webo from Camerun played in Europe for several Spanish and Turkish clubs

Flags are the only shiny stickers of this collection (there are no badge stickers)
